The Singing Stream

In collaboration with Electric Earth Concerts and the Harris Center for Conservation Education, Jazimina MacNeil and Marji Gere have created The Singing Stream, a musical and poetic journey through the Hiroshi Loop Trail in Peterborough. With Franz Schubert’s tender song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin (“The Lovely Maid of the Mill”) as your guide, we invite you to heighten your senses, open your heart, and walk in the woods in a new way. Here’s how it works:

  1. Download the music. Download the full 20-track album Die Schöne Müllerin onto your phone, tablet, iPod, or MP3 player using your music app of choice (Spotify, Google Play, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc.) We recommend Sanford Sylvan and David Breitman’s extraordinarily beautiful rendition.

  2. Get your sound system ready. Grab a small portable speaker so the music can mingle with the sounds of the forest. If you prefer headphones, we suggest earbuds that allow some sound from the outside world to filter in.

  3. Take a hike. Make your way to the Hiroshi Loop Trail. At the trailhead, pick up a green booklet with poetry translations and other information about the music and the forest. Start hiking, press play, and enjoy!
